Hiking & Trail Exploration

Participants hike through a mix of rural and natural landscapes at altitudes of 1400-2000 m, following gravel tracks, single-file footpaths, and cross-country routes. The trail passes through villages, homesteads, and natural areas, offering opportunities to observe daily life in remote communities.

Large sections traverse expanses of grassland, Protea woodland, indigenous forests, wetlands, and sandstone formations, with views of the Drakensberg mountains.

Weather Note: The trail can be hiked year-round, though summer thunderstorms or winter snow may occur, requiring weather awareness.

Trail Options: Self-carry or slack-pack available, with safe river crossings via sturdy bridges.

Cultural & Natural Observation

Hikers gain insights into local agricultural activities, such as cropping (e.g., maize fields) and livestock farming (e.g., encounters with herders, sheep, cattle, and goats).

The route provides a glimpse into rural Eastern Cape life, including interactions with local inhabitants and visits to homesteads. Experience the authentic daily rhythms of remote mountain communities.

A highlight is guided visits to several San rock art sites along the route, showcasing ancient cultural heritage. The trail also educates on the region's biodiversity.

Wildlife Sightings: Potential encounters with eland, mountain reedbuck, grey rhebuck, Chacma baboons, and black-backed jackal.

Bird Species: Look out for Bearded and Cape Vultures soaring above the mountains.

Plant Life: The trail features three species of Protea and diverse grassland, woodland, and forest habitats.

Mehloding Heritage Event 2025

Mpharane Village, George Moshesh Administrative Area, Matatiele, Eastern Cape

This event, held during South Africa's Tourism Month (September), was established through the inspiration of Mehloding Trust Coordinator Tsepo Leshulo as a partnership between the Freedom Challenge (an annual mountain biking event) and the Mehloding Community Tourism Trust.

The main objectives are to showcase the rich, diverse culture of Matatiele and preserve it for future generations.
